Madison Mayor Paul Soglin is introducing a resolution to allow city staff members to start negotiating with the owners of the Washington Plaza shopping center at the corner of East Washington Avenue and First Street.

The shopping center’s owners reportedly approached the city hoping to partner on redeveloping the site into a public market, future housing, retail, and offices. The market itself would require 60,000 to 70,000 square feet of space.

The public market had been targeted to replace a Fleet Services Building around the corner, but moving that facility would delay the opening of the market until 2019. The City Council will consider the resolution on May 17.
