Mayor Paul Soglin has vetoed a liquor license request for a Taco Bell Cantina restaurant that wants to serve and sell beer and wine.

Soglin has long opposed adding more liquor licenses to the downtown area, citing a problem with late night alcohol-fueled violence in the 500 block and other nearby areas that has stretched police resources.

Despite Soglin’s opposition, the Madison City Council voted earlier to allow the license on the condition the restaurant would stop serving alcohol at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday evenings, and by 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Now it will take 14 of 20 council votes to override the mayor’s veto.
