Small businesses employ nearly half of all workers in the state

An analysis of U.S. Census data by Construction Coverage found that in Wisconsin, 1,267,087 workers are employed at small businesses, which amounts to 49.47% of all workers in the state, compared to 47.09% nationally. Key findings of the analysis in Wisconsin include:  

  • Total number of small businesses: 106,260; 
  • Percentage of total payroll paid by small businesses: 41.54%; 
  • Total small business payroll per employee: $39,688; and 
  • Total large-firm payroll per employee: $54,681.
