Shopko Stores and Pamida have completed a merger announced earlier this year, creating one of the largest retail chains serving smaller and rural communities.

The combined $3 billion company will have nearly 350 stores in 22 states, and plans to add stores in the second half of 2012.

Shopko, headquartered in Green Bay, said in January that it would merge with the Omaha-based Pamida, citing “highly complementary” locations and communities, brand‐name selections, and pharmacy services.

The combined company will be headquartered in Green Bay and use the Shopko name. It will be led by Shopko chief executive W. Paul Jones.

According to Shopko, approximately $80 million will be invested over the next 12 months to convert most of Pamida’s locations to the Shopko Hometown store brand. Over the past two years, Shopko has purchased seven stores from Pamida and transitioned them to the Shopko Hometown format.

Both companies are owned by affiliates of Sun Capital Partners, Inc., a private investment firm focused on leverage buyouts.
