The company that operates the S.S. Badger ferryboat applied Thursday to continue releasing coal ash into Lake Michigan past a deadline set by federal regulators.
Lake Michigan Carferry submitted paperwork to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as it resumed hauling passengers and vehicles between Ludington and Manitowoc, Wis., following a winter break. The EPA has given the company until December to change the way it disposes of waste ash from its boilers.
