An Illinois developer wants to bring 134 mostly-senior apartments to Madison’s north side in two separate developments.

Alf McConnell, a general partner in the projects and the president of Liberty Mortgage and Development Co., has proposed a $13.5 million project at 1814 Packers Ave. that would add 64 affordable senior units and ground floor commercial space.

He’s also proposing a separate development nearby, a $15.5 million project at 1825 and 1837 Aberg Ave. that would add another 63 senior housing units plus seven townhouses for families, according to a Wisconsin State Journal story.

Neighbors have raised concerns about density and the amount of affordable housing being proposed in the relatively small area near the former Oscar Mayer site, which is also being developed.

McConnell plans to ask for city and county financial support, as well as WHEDA tax credits.

If all falls into place, he hopes the projects could break ground in 2021 and be completed a year later.
