Per President Donald Trump’s request, the Senate has passed roughly $9 billion in federal spending cuts, including significant reductions to public broadcasting and foreign aid, the Associated Press reports.
The legislative decision came amid concerns from several Republican senators and will now go to the House.
The legislation would minutely impact the rising U.S. debt but could have deep ramifications for the targeted spending, from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to U.S. food aid programs across the globe.
It could also hamper efforts to pass additional spending bills in 2025, as both Democrats and Republicans have argued they are ceding congressional spending powers to the president with little idea of how the White House Office Management and Budget would apply the cuts.
