A first step was taken to end the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history, with legislation passed Monday, according to an Associated Press report.

A group of Democrats helped pass the legislation with Republicans.

The shutdown has lasted 41 days and will most likely last a few more as members of the House return to Washington to vote on the legislation.

The federal government shutdown had been ongoing as Democrats sought a guarantee of Affordable Care Act subsidies.

During the shutdown, SNAP payments were delayed, flights were canceled as air traffic workers went unpaid and hundreds of thousands of federal workers were furloughed or unpaid.
