September is Hunger Action Month, and Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin is hosting a monthlong campaign to raise awareness and inspire actions like donating, advocating, volunteering, or spreading the word online.

Last fiscal year, Second Harvest partner agencies and programs reported an average 75% increase in the number of people seeking assistance as compared to the previous fiscal year.

Community members can get involved by:

  • Downloading the 30 Ways in 30 Days calendar, filled with 30 ways people can take action during Hunger Action Month;

  • Rounding up and/or donating $1, $3, or $5 at all area Kroger-family locations (including Metro Market and Pick ’n Save) from Sept. 1–30 for the company’s Hunger Action Month Round-Up campaign, with 100% of funds supporting Second Harvest;

  • Go Orange on Sept. 10 by wearing something orange (the symbolic color of hunger), taking a picture, and posting it here — for each of the first 500 pictures posted, Hunger Action Month sponsors Alliant Energy Foundation and Lands’ End will provide up to $100 in groceries for area residents in need; or

  • Participating in the 105.5 WMMM Request-a-Thon with Jonathan and Kitty from 6 a.m.–6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, by calling (608) 204-8000 or going online to make a donation and song request, with a $50 minimum donation to Second Harvest. The first $15,000 raised will be matched by the Alliant Energy Foundation and Quartz.
