The Middleton Police Department is seeking a new police chief as current Police Chief Troy Hellenbrand’s retirement approaches, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. Primary focus areas for the next chief include recruitment and retention, succession planning, and relationship building with underserved communities.
Hellenbrand, whose last day will be Dec. 18, served as a patrol officer, school resource officer, detective, patrol sergeant, detective/sergeant, administrative captain, and operations captain with Middleton police prior to his role as chief, which he took in 2020.
The position’s salary range is $112,997–$146,896 and includes a benefits package. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and meet the qualifications outlined by the Law Enforcement Standards Board within the first six months of employment. Additional requirements include advanced law enforcement training like the FBI National Academy, SMIP, Northwestern School of Police, and Command.
The department had received nearly 20 applicants by Oct. 15, none of which have come from within the department. The city aims to make a selection by about Nov. 18.
