Pour one out for the “beer that made Milwaukee famous.”

After 177 years, Schlitz will be no more, as Pabst Brewing Co. is discontinuing the brand.

Pabst bought the brand in 1999 from Stroh Brewing Co,, which had purchased Schlitz in 1982. Schlitz remained true to its mid1900s recipe from 2008 until now.

Schlitz was founded in 1849 and rose to be the most popular beer in America in the 1950s.

But like all good things, it’s coming to an end.

However, Kirby Nelson announced on social media that he would brew the 1948 recipe at Wisconsin Brewing Co. to honor the fallen brand.

“I was dismayed by the news the Schlitz brand was, after 177 years, being retired,” Nelson said in a social media statement.

He asked Pabst if he could brew Schlitz to commemorate the brand, and they said yes.

Nelson is using brewery records from the 1950s to brew the homage

“Schlitz was the top selling beer in America at that time, and we are going to bring a beer from that golden era back,” Nelson said. “Brewing soon, and we will be hosting a tasting extravaganza of ‘The Last Schlitz’ at our brewery and beer garden on Saturday, June 27.”
