Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is proposing that more money from the city be allocated to support a $27 million men’s homeless shelter that is nearing completion, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.

The city, county, state and local nonprofit Porchlight Inc. have so far budgeted around $1.2 million per year to operate the 250-bed shelter — less than it will cost just to run overnight — while operating it continuously will cost an estimated $4 million.

The city had proposed to spend $300,000, Dane County just over $525,000, Wisconsin between $125,000-$150,000 and Porchlight $200,000.

Rhodes Conway’s forthcoming 2026 operating budget proposal calls for boosting the city’s contribution to $1.7 million, the mayor said Monday.

That would include $1 million in new spending and $700,000 from the Community Development Division’s existing budget.

The move would bring the shelter closer to its $4 million target.
