Madison has moved up in rank from a below-average ranking on the annual clean energy scorecard last year from the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) to most improved in a new analysis of the nation’s largest cities. However, Madison is still not on track to meet its greenhouse gas reduction targets. The new designation recognizes Madison’s rise to 39th in ACEEE rankings, up from 64th last year. The author of this year’s report said the city improved due to changes in the scoring and because of new ordinances that do the following:

  • Require most new multifamily and commercial parking structures to be built ready to accommodate electric vehicle charging equipment; and
  • Mandate that new developments incorporate more green infrastructure in stormwater management.
