Canopy owner Austin Carl held a “soft” opening of his establishment last week while still lacking a building permit and food and beverages licenses, including an alcohol license, according to a report on Fox47.
Fox47 quoted Madison building inspection supervisor Kyle Bunnow as saying that Carl has not even applied for a building permit and that he received a still unverified complaint during the soft opening that construction work was being done to alter the structure of the building. Such work is not allowed without a permit.
Not only does Carl lack an alcohol license and a building permit, an open records request by Fox47 also revealed he is without city licenses for food and drink and place of assembly. The place of assembly permit is not considered pertinent to Canopy’s opening because the building has passed a fire inspection, according to Madison Fire Marshal Ed Ruckriegel, although Carl still needs to fix an expired carbon monoxide system, service fire extinguishers, and fix several emergency lights.
In addition, Public Health of Madison and Dane County have not approved a food and drink license due to ongoing construction work in the kitchen.
