Denver design consultant Sasaki has refined its plan for the Lake Monona waterfront after months of community input, according to the Wisconsin State Journal, and some construction could begin as early as 2026.
The plan now incorporates a broad plaza and stairway connecting East Wilson Street to an amphitheater and a building for concessions and more on the waterfront. It also includes a bike and pedestrian underpass between Broom Street and North Shore Drive and, at Olin Park, a dock and overlook with views of the Capitol.
Many features from Sasaki’s initial proposal have been retained, including new lake access in several spots, separate bike and pedestrian paths, places to fish, wetland and water quality improvements, spots to dine and see performances, and a “canopy walk” among the trees in Olin Park.
The plan also seeks to honor the Ho-Chunk Nation and identifies multiple opportunities for artistic expression throughout the project.
Madison’s Lake Monona Waterfront Ad Hoc Committee on Wednesday proposed some tweaks to the project but is anticipated to approve the draft plan on Dec. 18 and move it forward to the City Council. The master plan should be finalized by the City Council by March or April.
