In another side effect of the coronavirus pandemic, nearly 5.4 million Americans have lost health insurance, according to a story in The New York Times.

This number represents more people who have ever lost coverage through job losses in a year. In a study by the nonpartisan consumer advocacy group Families U.S.A., the estimated increase in uninsured laid off workers over the three-month period was nearly 40% higher than the highest previous increase. That was during the recession of 2008 and 2009, when 3.9 million adults lost insurance.
