Madison-based Realta Fusion has raised $36 million in a Series A investment round and is targeting the mid-2030s for commercial fusion energy production, WisBusiness reports. Several investors joined the round, including the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and Green Bay’s TitletownTech.

The startup company is based on technology being developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While current nuclear power generation is limited to fission reactions, which involve splitting atoms to produce energy, fusion combines atoms and could provide a cleaner path to energy in the future.

Realta Fusion employs 18 workers and reportedly plans to grow to 30 by the end of the year. Its breakthroughs in the fusion industry could have significant impacts on Wisconsin’s workforce and manufacturing sector.
