RACINE COUNTY – The state’s new vehicle emissions program had a solid first month, and the network could soon be evaluated for the possibility of adding a few more shops, according to the program supervisor.
In seven southeastern Wisconsin counties that do not meet federal air-quality standards, including Racine County, vehicles must be tested for emissions every two years. In the past, the testing station on Melvin Avenue was the only place in the county to go. Under the new program that started July 1, 19 Racine County private businesses are now performing the tests.
Scott Selbach, state Department of Transportation vehicle inspection program supervisor, said they received few complaints during the first month of operation.
“I think customers are responding in a very positive way, I think shops are very pleased with how things are going,” Selbach said. “I think we had a very good month considering the magnitude of the change.”
