Following the passage of President Barack Obama’s federal health care law, some companies are getting an unexpected check in the mail from their insurance provider. But there are mixed feelings about whether the checks are a good thing.

About a week ago when Joel Hassler got the mail for his company, he opened it to find a check for about $1,000 from UnitedHealthcare.

“It wasn’t like I opened it and went ‘whee’ … It was a nice surprise, but I didn’t take a week off and close the store,” said Hassler, the owner of Rasmussen Diamonds, 6220 Washington Ave., Mount Pleasant.
