Outdated rules currently govern the ability for businesses and homeowners to generate their own electricity, but Wisconsin regulators plan to change that, according to a report from Wisconsin State Journal.
The Public Service Commission approved parameters for the revision of 17-year-old administrative codes on customer-owned energy sources. The rules were written in 2004 when rooftop solar panels, hydroelectric dams, and biogas generators were not as common as they are today. Among other things, the new rules will address energy storage and make it easier and more cost-effective for underserved communities to implement clean energy projects.
