The state Public Service Commission has granted preliminary approval to build the Cardinal-Hickory Creek power line between Middleton and Dubuque, Iowa.
The high-voltage transmission line is expected to cost $492 million and while controversial, commissioners believe it will help Wisconsin make the transition from fossil fuels to a clean energy grid and save money for Wisconsin ratepayers, according to an article in the Wisconsin State Journal. A final written order from the PSC, which could be subject to further approval, could come in September.
The transmission line is a joint venture of American Transmission Co., ITC Midwest, and Dairyland Power Cooperative.
