Ald. Ledell Zellers, 2nd District, and other City Council members are asking the city and county to collaborate on placing personal storage lockers for the homeless inside area parking garages. The lockers would be large enough to hold sleeping gear, and would be accessible by combination lock and registration system. The proposed cost would be $10,000, and lockers would not replace any parking stalls, according to reports.
Zeller’s idea follows on the heels of the city’s decision to close a space behind the Madison Municipal Building that was previously used to store the homeless’ belongings. That space closed after just three months because of reports of illicit activity and health concerns.
