Five Madison City Council members and Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway are proposing city zoning changes aimed at fast-tracking much-needed multifamily housing, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. The new rules, if approved, would make small- and medium-density development a “by right” permitted project if standards are met in the areas zoned for such development.
Projects eligible under the proposal could range from adding a unit to an existing single-family home to a new 60-unit building. The goal of the proposal is to relax the city’s rigorous process to speed construction of needed housing and would most affect the Isthmus, areas at the edges of the city, Williamson Street, Mineral Point Road, University Avenue, and Park Street.
