Green Bay may welcome another kind of professional football — in addition to American football — to its ranks of pro sports.
According to a Wisconsin Public Radio report, the city of Green Bay entered an agreement with the United Soccer League to explore bringing men’s and women’s professional soccer to the city.
According to the deal, USL cannot seek another team in the Brown, Outagamie, Manitowoc or Winnebago counties, and the city cannot solicit proposals from other soccer leagues. However, the league could look for teams in other regions of Wisconsin.
The exclusivity period prohibiting proposals from other leagues runs through September 2026, and could be extended to September 2027.
A lot of work remains.
USL needs to identify a stadium site and investors, and gain community support and input.
Madison is home to Forward Madison, Wisconsin’s sole USL team. Forward Madison will add a women’s team in 2026. Milwaukee is also a potential USL site.
Forward Madison’s women’s team has already sold over 800 season tickets for its inaugural season.
