Canada announced this week it would diversify its export destinations over the next decade, and now President Donald Trump has announced an end to Canada trade talks, according to an Associated Press report.
Late on Thursday, President Trump said on social media he would end all trade negotiations after a TV advertisement in Canada from the government of Ontario opposing U.S. tariffs said he misstated facts and tried to influence U.S. court decisions.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had already announced his country would double exports to countries outside of the U.S. because of the U.S. tariffs.
Canada is also a top export for 36 U.S. states, with nearly $3.6 billion in goods and services going to the northern neighbor.
Canada’s free trade deal with the U.S. is up for review in 2026.
