According to WXOW, the cost to the U.S. economy of a 10-day UPS strike could be as much as $7.1 billion — the costliest work stoppage in the nation’s history.
The estimate comes from Anderson Economic Group, which also noted the hit to businesses and consumers would be $4.6 billion by itself, causing harm to small businesses, sole practitioners, household workers, and online retailers.
UPS could see estimated losses of $816 million; the 340,000 members of the Teamsters union at the company could lose $1.1 billion in wages.
Without a new contract agreement between the union and the company, the union has promised to strike on Aug. 1. Last week, talks broke off with both sides accusing the other of walking away from the table.
