According to the Wisconsin State Journal, this year’s opening night for Concerts on the Square, scheduled for this evening, has been tentatively rescheduled to 7 p.m. Thursday due to poor air quality in the region caused by Canadian wildfire smoke.
The performance is set to be headlined by Afro-Caribbean music group ¡Viva Tiempo Libre! The concert this week marks the 40th anniversary of Concerts on the Square, a free weekly concert series on the Capitol lawn, surrounded by food trucks and other vendors.
On Tuesday, the state Department of Natural Resources issued an air quality advisory for all of Wisconsin, effective until noon Thursday. The Air Quality Index in the state’s eastern portion is expected to range between “unhealthy” and “very unhealthy,” with the potential to reach the highest level, “hazardous.”
The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra has said it will continue to provide updates online.
The Wisconsin State Journal also reports that the Madison School District is closing today; there will be no Madison School and Community Recreation programs, summer school classes — including virtual programming, or athletic practices.
