Sun Prairie is delaying consideration of a proposal that would make way for a downtown Sun Prairie apartment development and hotel on the site of a 2018 natural gas explosion that resulted in the death of a city firefighter and the collapse or damage of six buildings, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The City Council was anticipated to approve a $7 million incentives package earlier this week, but progress was paused after council members voiced concerns about the proposed project at the northwest corner of Bristol and Main streets.
The incentives package is the final element of the $41.4 million development requiring approval, apart from obtaining building permits and other routine construction approvals. City staff will reportedly return for further talks with developer JCap Real Estate of Eau Claire.
JCap’s plans consist of a four-story, 63-room Cobblestone Hotel and restaurant set to open by July 1, 2026, and a four-story, 100-unit apartment building scheduled to open by June 1, 2027.
