A new proposal from Chicago-based Peerless Development would replace longtime Regent Street businesses Hong Kong Café and Choles Floral Co. with an apartment building, according to Isthmus.
Following those businesses’ demolition, the new development would feature 113 housing units as well as 1,300 square feet of commercial space.
Hong Kong Café owner Terry Leung had listed the building at 2 S. Mills St. for sale at $3.58 million in 2024, citing financial and labor-related reasons. The restaurant has anchored the corner of Mills and Regent streets for over 30 years.
Choles Floral, meanwhile, has operated in the Madison area since 1910, according to its website.
The proposed development would reportedly include a mix of studio, two-bedroom, four-bedroom and five-bedroom apartments and underground parking for around 60 cars and 133 bikes.
City staff expect an official application for the project to be submitted sometime in March. Knothe & Bruce Architects submitted a demolition request to the city on Feb. 6 for the buildings housing Hong Kong Café and Choles, along with the parking lot at 1111 Regent St.
A neighborhood meeting regarding the proposals will take place Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.
