The city has refused developer JD McCormick Properties of Madison’s bid to raze three, two-story State Street buildings for a six-story housing project with commercial space, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
The decision comes after 18 months of effort to demolish the buildings at 428–430, 432–436, and 440–444 State St. and replace them with a space including 25 housing units and 6,285 square feet of commercial space.
The Plan Commission’s Monday decision was unanimous; it placed McCormick’s demolition permit request “on file without prejudice” and voted for an “indefinite referral” of its request for a conditional use permit.
The commission refused the demolition because the current buildings fit the context and scale of neighboring structures; McCormick did not offer sufficient information on why they would need to be razed.
McCormick may sell or lease the properties, could return to the Plan Commission with more information, or could appeal its decision to the City Council.
