Madison’s Plan Commission rejected plans for a far southeast side gas station that drew concerns from McFarland officials and residents because of its proximity to a village well.
The proposed station, convenience store, and cafe or coffee shop would have been located at the corner of Siggelkow and Freedom Ring roads; while technically the location is in Madison, Siggelkow Road is the border with McFarland.
Neighbors of the proposed project expressed fears about lighting and noise, in addition to concerns about gas vapors being released close to homes, The Capital Times reported.
Village officials were concerned about the proposed gas station’s proximity to McFarland’s Well No. 3, which would have been about 1,200 feet from where underground fuel storage tanks were planned. McFarland’s Well No. 2 was shut down in 1987 because of contamination from a source 1,800 feet from the well.
While the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection gave conditional approval to the gas station in January, a DNR official recommended in May that the location should not be used for underground fuel storage.
