Madison’s Plan Commission on Monday approved a proposal that would redevelop a portion of Mifflin Street on the condition that an existing house with historic value is relocated, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.

The proposal from local nonprofit workforce housing developer and management organization Madison Development Corp. includes a four-story, 40-unit apartment building at 423–427 W. Mifflin St. It would be situated next to the nonprofit’s Mifflander Apartments at 431 W. Mifflin St.

The project would raze a single-family residence, a two-family residence, and a four-unit apartment building designed by local architect Ferdinand Kronenberg and built in the 1920s. Efforts to relocate the latter structure have stalled. Madison Development Corp. has offered to pay the equivalent of the demolition cost toward the building’s relocation, but it might not be enough.

The Plan Commission also approved a proposal that calls for the demolition of a building near Williamson Street, currently home to Italian delicatessen and sandwich shop Alimentari, and its replacement with a six-story, mixed-use building with 120 apartments and two commercial tenant spaces.
