Pizza sales slow down for chains

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be ashamed, but pizza chain popularity is falling, according to the Wall Street Journal.

According to the report and industry data, sales growth for pizza restaurants has lagged other fast food markets for years, and pizzerias are outnumbered by coffee shops and Mexican food eateries after ranking as the second-most common U.S. restaurant type.

Pizza Hut, Papa John’s and Papa Murphy’s are all considering sales or strategic moves these days. Midsize chains like Blaze Pizza and Mod Pizza have also closed locations over the past two years.

Pizza chains made about $31 billion in sales from restaurants in 2024, but ranked sixth in U.S. sales in 2024 among restaurant chains. In the 1990s, pizza chains ranked second.

Figures of pizza restaurants have declined since a record-high in 2019, according to market-research firm Datassential.
