The U.S. Department of Energy is giving Monona-based Phoenix Nuclear Labs a $1 million grant to design and build a device that could produce medical isotopes and computer chips in the short run and may produce nuclear fusion energy somewhere down the line. Phoenix will collaborate with scientists from laboratories in Illinois and California on a $1 billion project that might not be completed until 2020. The cutting-edge project could affect how medical isotopes, computer chips, and nuclear energy are produced.
