PFC appoints interim Madison police chief

Madison’s Police and Fire Commission (PFC) on Monday appointed Assistant Chief John Patterson as Police Chief Shon Barnes’ interim successor, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. Barnes’ last day in the role will be Feb. 1. He was was announced as Seattle’s next chief of police on Dec. 20.

Patterson was Barnes’ choice to assume the position while the city undertakes a search for his permanent replacement. He has been overseeing community outreach, department finances, training, and the department’s honor guard, mental health unit, and SWAT team.

The PFC unanimously approved the appointment of Patterson without discussion.
