People incarcerated in Wisconsin may receive federal student aid to help pay for higher education for the first time in almost three decades, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.
Congress passed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid Simplification act in December, and the eligibility of those incarcerated to receive Pell Grants was restored this summer.
According to a U.S. Department of Education estimate, 760,000 more participants enrolling in prison education programs nationwide could be eligible to receive higher education grants under the Pell Grants expansion.
Some people believe the restored eligibility to Pell Grants may help prevent people from reoffending and provide sustaining wages for families following incarceration of one or more members.
