In his first major speech since becoming House Speaker, Paul Ryan today called for tough work requirements and cuts to safety net programs as he outlined the congressional Republican agenda for 2017 and beyond.
According to the Associated Press, excerpts released by Ryan’s office ahead of the speech were short on specifics. But the former House Budget Committee chairman, who’s previously proposed cuts to Medicaid and converting Medicare into a voucher-like program, hinted at fresh assaults on federal programs.
Ryan also indicated his priority is not to find common ground with the president but rather to lay out specific GOP proposals and let voters decide for themselves whose policies they prefer.
