Wisconsin’s two newest license plates have proven popular.
The plates feature a black design with white letters and numbers, and the 1970s-style butter yellow background with black letters and numbers, and the tagline “America’s Dairyland.” Both are expected to raise more than $25 million for the state’s transportation fund in the first three years of release.
So far, over 10,000 have been purchased, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, with 9,493 blackout plates and 1,201 retro yellow plates issued.
Nearly half of the plates have been personalized, which carries an extra $15 annual fee.
The plates became available on Jan. 9. Both plates cost a one-time $15 issuance fee, plus a $25 annual registration fee.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, initial calculations show the first month of sales will bring in nearly $250,000 into the state’s transportation fund, with the first year estimated to bring in $4.6 million in the first fiscal year and $12 million in the second year.
