According to Wisconsin Public Radio, workers on Dane County’s health insurance plan can apply for reimbursement for lodging and mileage if they travel out –of state to terminate a pregnancy. The policy is retroactive to Jan. 1 and covers spouses and dependents as well.
Last year, Dane County supervisors voted 6–3 in favor of allocating up to $20,000 for the reimbursement policy as part of the county’s yearly budget, later signed by County Executive Joe Parisi.
The travel benefit became available to employees earlier this month. Dane County’s policy follows similar policies adopted by several major corporations following the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
Milwaukee County supervisors have discussed setting aside abortion travel funds for employees, but officials there have raised concerns about legality under state law.
Under the abortion travel plan in Dane County, employees with single insurance can be reimbursed up to $1,000 annually; those with family insurance can be reimbursed up to $2,000. The county’s benefits provider, Employee Benefits Corporation, will review those claims rather than county employees.
