Neighbors have expressed concern about environmental contamination at the former Oscar Mayer site and this may not be the only sticking point to getting a $300 million redevelopment plan approved by the Madison City Council, according to a story from Wisconsin State Journal. While community outreach to residents of the north and east sides has garnered broad support of the Oscar Mayer Special Area Plan, opponents worry about traffic, housing density, and the loss of key open space. Additionally, they oppose plans to locate a Metro Transit bus garage on the site.Â
City Council Vice President Syed Abbas, a representative for the area, said the north side needs more economic development but will support the surrounding neighborhood associations in voicing their concerns. The City Council is slated to vote on the plan this week.Â
