Eleven orthopedic surgeons who left SSM Health to start a competing practice a year ago are now operating at five regional hospitals and plan to open a Dane County surgery center by the end of 2024, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
In February, the surgeons opened Madison’s Orthopedic and Spine Centers of Wisconsin. They are doing procedures at Beloit Memorial Hospital, Marshfield Medical Center–Beaver Dam, Edgerton Hospital, Southwest Health in Platteville, and Watertown Regional Medical Center.
Edgerton Hospital did not offer orthopedic care until four of the group’s surgeons began working there this year. Other regional hospitals have also expanded orthopedic services through the group.
Most of the doctors in August also began working at UnityPoint Health–Meriter in Madison. Some are operating at SSM Health’s hospitals in Madison, Janesville, and Baraboo.
The independent practice, which includes 12 surgeons, is managed by Phoenix-based Healthcare Outcomes Performance. Dr. Thomas Zdeblick, former UW–Madison orthopedics department chair, joined the other 11 doctors in April.
