The iconic Orpheum Theater sign will soon receive a much-needed restoration.
According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison’s Landmarks Commission on Monday approved plans from theater owners Gus and Mary Paras to complete a $200,000 historic replication and return the sign to its original 1926 design.
The restoration will involve replacing the steel face with an aluminum replica of the original. Energy efficient lights are also slated to be used along the sign’s exterior and within the original letters.
The Paras family, which acquired the building at 216 State St. in late 2013, has already invested heavily in the theater’s restoration. The building’s front facade, marquee, ticket booth, roof, interior ceiling and sidewalls, downstairs bathrooms, entertainer’s guest rooms, and heating and cooling systems have all been restored or received upgrades.
