Madison Opera’s free summer event, Opera in the Park, is set to return to Garner Park on July 20 at 8 p.m., following its first-ever rainout last year in its 22-year history, according to Isthmus.
This year’s lineup features soprano Katerina Burton, making her Madison Opera debut as Donna Anna in the upcoming season’s Don Giovanni. The cast also includes two Wisconsin natives: mezzo-soprano Emily Fons, who will perform as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, and tenor Joshua Sanders, known for his role as Toby in Madison Opera’s 2015 production of Sweeney Todd. Baritone Weston Hurt, who previously starred in Madison Opera’s La Traviata, completes the cast. They will be led by Maestro John DeMain, with accompaniment from the Madison Opera Chorus and the Madison Symphony Orchestra.
Despite production costs soaring to approximately $350,000 due to inflation, the event continues to thrive thanks to the support of individual sponsors who have stepped up as some corporate sponsors have retreated.
