Madison’s One City Schools will host a community rally on Thursday, July 10 at The Sylvee in celebration of its 10-year anniversary, The Capital Times reports. The rally will feature actor, director, author and education advocate LeVar Burton and scholar Gloria Ladson-Billings, who will moderate a conversation on how schools, families and communities can pursue educational excellence. The event will also include music by Madison record producer DJ Pain.

One City has raised $50 million over the past decade to support local, underprivileged students. Roughly 92% of the charter school district’s students are people of color, 70% come from poverty and 20% have special needs. One City is also Dane County’s only expeditionary learning (EL) school — defined by an emphasis on literary foundations and character development — and among only five statewide.

One City currently offers three schools — a tuition-based preschool and two tuition-free public charters with a total of 482 students.
