Affordable Care Act premiums are expected to skyrocket in 2026 without extending enhanced subsidies, and have increased about 118% since 2014, according to a Wisconsin Watch report.
The federal government shutdown is at a stalemate because Democrats want to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies. These make more people eligible for coverage but will expire on Dec. 31.
According to the report, without the subsidies, Wisconsin residents may see an increase in 2026 premiums of up to 800%. The average cost of a monthly premium for an Obamacare plan was $273 in 2014 and could rise to $596 in 2026.
