NorthStar Medical Technologies has signed an agreement with Hendricks Commercial Properties to develop a medical isotope production facility in Beloit, according to a report in the Beloit News.
The 200-square-foot facility will be built in the Gateway Business Park and enable the safe, non-uranium-based production of Molybdenum-99, a medical isotope used in diagnostic medical procedures. The radioisotope now is supplied entirely by foreign nuclear reactors, and the Beloit facility will provide a North American source and address supply shortages.
NorthStar would become the first domestic Molybdenum-99 supplier. The company has been producing Molybdenum-99 and Tc99m since 2007.
The facility is expected to break ground in 2013 and be completed in mid-2014.
