A Sheboygan County nonprofit is developing a U.S. village for people diagnosed with dementia to live in their own homes, Wisconsin Public Radio reports.

Dementia Innovations is modeled after a similar European model that encourages people with memory loss to live more independently. The village will be called Livasu, short for living as usual.

People with dementia will be able to live alone or with loved ones.

Wisconsin Public Radio reports the model has been applauded for years, but could be hard to replicate in the U.S.

The village is estimated to cost $14 million to create. Manufactured homes will be used to reduce expenses.

Homeowners in the village will be free to travel throughout it with support from staff.
