Following the discovery of thousands of dollars in “questionable” expenses by the former chief of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at UW-Madison, leaders at the university are limiting the freedom that vice chancellors and other officials have over their budgets, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
Vice chancellors can no longer carry over more than 10% of their budgets from one year to the next, under the new rules, and going forward, any carryover funds over 10% will be redistributed back into a central campus fund to be used elsewhere.
Other changes recently implemented include:
-
Pay raises of over 10% must be approved by the university’s chief human resources officer;
-
The Office of Finance and Administration will meet with division heads on a quarterly basis to review finances;
-
An overhaul of human resources software at all UW system schools will allow leaders to more easily track expenses; and
-
The establishment of monthly compliance audits will include compensation and bonus changes.
