On a unanimous vote, the Madison City Council adopted a new ordinance intended to standardize the process of operating tourist rooming houses (TRH), the license required for hosts on Airbnb and VRBO, according to a Wisconsin State Journalreport. Additionally, the ordinance seeks to crack down on noncompliance for both new and existing regulations.
The ordinance goes into effect on Oct. 1 and includes a $100 application fee, as well as an annual $100 licensing fee for anyone wishing to operate a TRH. With other fees from the Department of Public Health, initial costs for a TRH will run about $800 for the first year.
