Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Secretary Craig Thompson joined federal, state, local, and tribal officials to celebrate completion of the new interchange at U.S. 12/18 and County AB on Madison’s east side. The new diamond interchange is expected to significantly enhance safety for daily commuters, while the new frontage roads will improve connectivity and access to local businesses. The overall interchange design is aimed at spurring economic development in the area.

Design work began in 2020, and WisDOT staff met regularly with Dane County, city of Madison, and Ho-Chunk Nation officials to discuss the interchange redesign. Construction started in 2022 and improvements included:

  • A new County AB bridge over U.S. 12/18;
  • Roundabouts at the interchange ramps;
  • Frontage roads connecting Millpond Road and Long Drive; and
  • A roundabout at the Millpond Road and County AB intersection.

The $29 million project was funded by the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program, WisDOT, Dane County, the city of Madison, and the Ho-Chunk Nation.

Motorists are encouraged to drive safely in the area as finishing work continues under traffic conditions. Overall project completion is expected in November.
